Ezekiel Emanuel

Vice Provost of Global Initiatives
Chair, Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy
Levy University Professor
Perelman School of Medicine and The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

Levy University Professor, and chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. Trained as both an oncologist and a political scientist, Emanuel offers a thoughtful perspective on the most difficult issues in health care today.

From 2009 to 2011, Emanuel was a special advisor for health policy to the White House Office of Management and Budget, where he influenced federal health care budgets and the Affordable Care Act. A founding chair at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, Emanuel currently chairs the meta-council on The Future of Health Committee for the World Economic Forum. Until 1997, he was an associate professor at Harvard Medical School.

Emanuel has authored or edited 12 books; his latest, Prescription for the Future, distills 12 transformational practices from medical organizations that have achieved higher-quality, more patient-focused, and lower-cost care. He developed The Medical Directive, a comprehensive living will, and has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles on health care reform, research ethics, end-of-life care, euthanasia, managed care ethics, and the physician-patient relationship. Emanuel also contributes health care and policy analysis to Fox News, The New York Times, and CNN.

Emanuel served on President Clinton’s Health Care Task Force, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission, and the bioethics panel of the Pan-American Healthcare Organization. A venture partner at Oak HC/FT, Emanuel was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, Association of American Physicians, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal College of Medicine. He received the 2018 Dan David Prize for Bioethics, an honor recognizing innovative and interdisciplinary research that cuts across traditional boundaries and paradigms.
